Picture yourself going to work on Monday morning. Do you reach for coffee or tea as your go to day starter? Most of us do, the caffeine helps us wake up and feel ready for the day ahead of us. If you ever needed an added reason to drink more coffee or tea, we found one for you, it may just be good for your hearing! That is right, caffeine from coffee is now being connected to lower risks of hearing loss and even tinnitus in women!
The study which has been published in The American Journal of Medicine pooled data that tracked both reports of tinnitus and the caffeine intake of over 65,0000 women from the Nurses’ Health Study II. The participants ranged in age from 30-34 and nearly 5,289 of them reported experiencing tinnitus during the 18 years they were part of the study. The women track every item that they ingested which contained caffeine, including drinks like coffee and foods such as chocolate. Researchers found that the women who ingested 450 milligrams to 599 milligrams of caffeine daily were 15% less likely to experience hearing loss, those who consumed more than 600 milligrams were 21% likely to develop tinnitus. To put it into perspective, to meet the 450-599mg category, a person would have to consume about four 8ox. cups of coffee. This is great news for our morning, snack, and dinner coffee drinkers! They continue to research this and most doctors will agree in saying that caffeine is not a treatment for tinnitus, however they would love for it to be one. They will however, suggest that you continue to enjoy your coffee whenever you would like knowing that it may just help keep your ears a bit more healthy in the long run.
